Dear Premier-designate Doerkson,

I am calling on your government to take immediate action to halt logging of some of our province's most rare and at risk original old-growth forests near Foster Creek in the northern Monashee Mountains.

These blocks contain irreplaceable old and ancient forests and caribou habitat for the Columbia North herd.

One hundred of the 120 hectares currently being logged were recommended for immediate deferral by the province's own technical advisory panel as part of BC's commitment to press pause on logging its most at-risk old growth. Instead, BC Timber Sales has quietly removed nearly 100 hectares of deferral in order for it to be logged. BCTS put the blocks up for auction in June and sold them in early July. Logging began in late August. Two of the three blocks have been cut. One block, FOS002B, remains standing and it contains spectacular ancient forest. We are calling on you to act immediately to defer harvesting here.

Logging here will destroy irreplaceable ancient inland rainforest and put caribou in the Columbia North herd at greater predation risk, resulting in population declines.

Your government has committed to protecting original old growth and our rarest forests. You have a responsibility to protect caribou habitat and these irreplaceable ecosystems.

Please defer harvesting and development in FOS002B with a Part 13 deferral under the Forest Act.

Sincerely,
