Dear Premier Horgan and Minister Conroy,

British Columbia’s old growth forests are globally unique and deserve protection. Thank you for committing to implement all 14 recommendations in the recent Old Growth Report. But commitment is not action: we cannot continue to talk about protecting old growth while we watch it get loaded on logging trucks. I urge you to:

• Work with Indigenous Nations, leaders, and organizations to determine the future of old growth forests. 
• Protect all at-risk old growth forests where ecosystems are at risk of irreversible biodiversity loss. Protections should also be prioritized in places like the Inland Temperate Rainforest, which is globally unique and among the rarest ecosystems in BC. 
• Declare conservation of ecosystem health and biodiversity of British Columbia’s forests as an overarching priority and enact legislation that legally establishes this priority for all sectors. Currently timber supply is the only overarching provincial priority for the forestry sector. 
• Support forestry workers and communities as we transition away from harvesting old growth forests. Support a just transition to a value- added and locally- beneficial forest industry that creates value for every tree that is cut instead of unsustainable cut levels and volume driven exports.
