Logging in the Columbia Wetlands

Registration is closed for this event
Letter writing workshop

A logging company is proposing to log in the fragile Columbia Wetlands Wildlife Management Area. We’re hosting a letter writing workshop to draw attention to the issue, and to ask government officials to put an end to this ridiculous proposal.

The Columbia Wetlands are the largest intact wetlands in southern BC. Rich in plant and animal life, this 180 km-long wetland, stretching from Columbia Lake to Donald, is home to more than 300 species of animals, 65 of which are designated species at risk.

World-renowned for its beauty and biodiversity, the Columbia Wetlands is also a key stopover and breeding ground for migratory birds, and helps connect sensitive species such as grizzly bears moving across larger landscapes.

WMAs are provincially-designated areas designed to protect fish and wildlife species or their habitats. Canfor’s proposed logging west of Castledale, 50 km south of Golden, entirely overlaps with the ~17,000 ha. Columbia Wetlands WMA.

Wildlife populations are in serious decline across the province. If we can’t prioritize wildlife in a WMA, where can we give wildlife priority over resource extraction?

In the one-hour workshop, Invermere Branch Director Tracy Flynn will walk us through these points and other related concerns with Canfor’s proposal, with the goal of writing effective, targeted letters to the decision makers on this file. So join us on Zoom as we take an old school approach to this new threat to our wetlands.
