Wicking beds are a unique and increasingly popular way to grow vegetables. They are self-contained raised beds with built-in reservoirs that supply water from the bottom up – changing how, and how much, you water your beds. Luke Kimmel of the Leaf Ninjas will guide this hands-on workshop, providing everything you need to replicate the technique at home using different materials and aesthetic appearances. With useful take-home materials, hands-on practice & Luke’s thorough and fun teaching style you’ll be given a solid base to confidently re-create the technique at home for your personal garden and lifestyle.

Not only will you learn how applying this technique to repurposed freezers and fridges provides extra insulation to plants and soil, you will be able to give yourself a pat on the back for ridding landfills of large waste products! You’ll never know your raised bed is a repurposed fridge or freezer after it’s been disguised with use of some paint and the imagination!

A Little About Luke Kimmel

Luke believes that creating a more peaceful and prosperous world is possible through discovering ways to work with rather than against nature, and has dedicated his life to pursuing this vision through a hands on approach.

Luke has now designed and facilitated the installation of over a dozen edible landscapes in Calgary and abroad, helped found the Leaf Ninjas urban farm in the neighborhoods of Inglewood and Ramsay, as well as studied with international experts on topics such as food forestry, permaculture, organic farming, broad scale landscape restoration, rainwater harvesting, composting, soil biology and more.

Visions of paradise inspire Luke in his role as a designer, project contractor, and public speaker with Leaf Ninjas. Luke’s passion is “making it happen” and whether that’s on the job or in his spare time, you can often find him happily creating things out in the garden.

The Leaf Ninjas now work with a range of clients from urban homes to community gardens, private developments, rural homesteads, and more; designing and installing a range of edible landscaping and food forest systems.
