Cottonwood Island Nature Walk
Explore the rich ecology of the Goat River valley on a guided walk led by retired forester and Wildsight Creston director Jim Smith.
This unique hike begins in Canyon on Jim and Sandy Smith’s private trail system, winding through 115 year-old fir, larch, and cedar forests. From there, we’ll cross Camp Run Creek to reach Cottonwood Island - a stunning riparian haven along the Goat River, home to a variety of wildlife, including species at risk.
You'll walk beneath towering cottonwoods and past the stumps of massive cedar trees logged over 140 years ago, discovering the diverse plant life of this rare river-bottom forest.
Meet at 4039 Zapp Road in Canyon. Please wear long pants as we may encounter stinging nettles. Bring water and a snack!
We look forward to sharing this special place with you!
